In Pueblo right now there is a lot of discussion about what will happen with the cool old power plant building located near the Old Town shopping area. It is a lovely big brick building with a tall smokestack and a nice big yard, and I really think it should be developed into an art gallery like the Tate Modern. In fact if I knew how to find financing I’d make it a gallery myself. There are lots of artists in the American Southwest, Mexico and South America whose contemporary art draws on the imagery and stories of past eras, and I think we need a great modern art museum that focuses more on those artists and on artists who are marginalized because of gender or ethnicity. It would most definitely add a lot of business to our Old Town area, where right now the shops are not open for long because no one is around to shop in them.
Near the Old Town area on Union Ave. there is a section of the Arkansas River that is lined by a tall concrete dam that protects the city from 100-yr floods. That dam has been decorated with sanctioned graffiti-like art for decades and is mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Union Old Town area has lots of old buildings that look really cool, and if the city had a few more great attractions, like a world-class art museum, to draw people to Pueblo, that Old Town area could be really neat.
