Virtual Turntable – 9 October 2014

What are you listening to today? My spotify plans for today include lots of great singer-songwriters. I may also check out a biography I downloaded recently on Etta James.

First on my list is Lara Ruggles. Her new album Out of an Eggshell is fantastic. I met Lara at an open mic awhile back, as a very nice, ordinary person with a guitar, someone I’d love to just hang out with for lunch or coffee or a game of Trivial Pursuit. Listening to her play in a nearly empty open mic room, she sounded amazing; listening to her album now I can easily imagine her becoming the next celebrity female singer-songwriter. Her voice reminds me a bit of Natalie Merchant’s, but blended in with all sorts of other tones and styles to create a unique, soulful, storyteller’s voice.

The rest of today’s list includes:

  • Esme Patterson, Woman to Woman
  • Aaron Embry, Tiny Prayers
  • Carl Broemel, All Birds Say
  • Communist Daughter, Lions & Lambs
  • Chris Bathgate, Salt Year

I’m sure there will be more. I usually wind up including Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Hannah & Maggie, Justin Roth, Tyler T., and bands like Caravan of Thieves, The Deadwood Saints, and Elephant Revival that are also focused on amazing original songs. Not all my favorite bands are on spotify, most notably Von Stomper and Winchester Holiday, but there are still so many great songs to discover on spotify that I’ll be browsing and discovering plenty of new ones today too. In fact, the 4 artists besides Esme and Lara so far on my playlist today are ones I found but have not yet listened to properly last time I was hunting new music on spotify.

What’s on your playlist today?
