A Book A Day #3 – Fun With Your New Head

Today’s book is one of my favorite collections of creepy, fascinating and truly memorable sci-fi short stories, Fun With Your New Head, by Thomas M. Disch. This book contains several of the short stories I read for the first time as a pre-teen in middle school, stories that have stuck in my mind ever since. My favorite, “The Roaches”, may be a precursor to the disturbing film Joe’s Apartment, with its almost endearing masses of talking roaches. The entire rest of the book is a romp through all sorts of surrealist landscapes, strange logics and impossible universes. If you like sci-fi not for its space operas and star-scale battles, but for its wilder, more psychologically haunting sides, this book is for you.
