If you missed the show last week, here’s a taste of what you missed at Avogadro’s Number on January 4th, 2014. Singer/songwriters Abe Abraham and Stelth Ulvang came up from Denver to open for Maxwell Hughes, before they headed off to start their current mini-tour together. Maxwell Hughes will be on tour as well starting today. Maxwell will be in Oklahoma and Texas next week. Stelth and Abe have had a bit of car trouble in Oregon earlier this week, but they will be playing a show in Emeryville (California) on Friday and hopefully their car will behave itself from now on for their last 2 shows, both in California.
For those who don’t recognize these guys by name, Stelth Ulvang is a member of the Lumineers, and Maxwell Hughes is a former member of the Lumineers. Both are excellent musicians when playing solo as well- Maxwell is easily one of the most talented guitarists in Colorado, if not the world. It is easy to take great live music for granted when you have such great local musicians as these playing shows at your regular evening hang-out spots.
Sadly, I have to admit though, that I realized I do have a teensy bit of a vain side, as a music blogger- I did enjoy the fact that this show included two musicians from a band that my favorite celebrity musicians have been excited about seeing. (I was a fan of the Lumineers when they were just another indie folk rock band from Denver on youtube, and liked Maxwell and his music long before I heard about his connection with the Lumineers, so I was not starstruck, just a bit of a vain, newbie music blogger.) Stelth was really good though, celebrity or not, and really nice, and not what I expected- on piano he reminds me very much of the Peanuts character Linus, in a good way.
My favorite of the three, though, from their sets on January 4th, was Abe Abraham. His style is reminiscent of several of my favorite ‘guy-with-guitar’ musicians, and he writes very appealing songs. I could easily imagine all 3 of these lads as famous solo performers touring all over the world, but Abe’s music seemed particularly radio-worthy. Maybe by the next time he’s playing in town he’ll be famous and will be dragging along his own bodyguards (which would really suck, cause I didn’t ask for autographs this time ’round). All 3 are fantastic, though, and if they are playing in a town near you, they are well worth catching live. In the meantime, you can listen to some of these fellows’ music on bandcamp (and since bandcamp also lets you buy and download music, you can also buy these albums and support these artists if you like their work).
