Ravenmount: from the Editor

Ravenmount is getting a facelift, gradually, as I learn more about how to build a nifty website using wordpress. In my mind, Ravenmount was never just a music blog, though that is still my favorite part of my ‘personal brand’. In my imagination, Ravenmount is the name of a fabulous arts center with living quarters for artists (much like Chautauqua in Boulder used to be), performance and practice spaces for musicians, gallery spaces for visual artists, and a big greenhouse complex and botanical garden.

So far in reality Ravenmount is still just a music blog, with a twitter account, tumblr page, pinterest boards and facebook page, and since I am terrible at being a salesman or a lead generator, Ravenmount is also about to make me a very broke and hungry blogger. But the dream remains, so Ravenmount’s website is improving, and while I am still looking for ‘real’ advertisers, I posted two ads of my own, for my social media and tutoring services.

What I really need, though, beyond advertising and clients for services I can offer, is donations from people who benefit from Ravenmount and from people who wish to support the local music and arts scenes. If I can ‘make’ $12,000 a year, I can afford to dedicate my time to Ravenmount in its current guise as a more-than-full-time job. So, small donations to my efforts have a big impact on the scene. Does this sound like begging for money? It probably should- I don’t want to go broke, and I don’t want to have to stop covering live shows, taking hundreds of photos every week, writing blog posts and songlist posts, networking and supporting the various cool arts projects in Fort Collins. If a little grovelling now can keep my blogging efforts going, I’ll grovel.

In the meantime, the music continues. This week’s shows include Celtic Thunder in Loveland (a show I have been looking forward to all year), and two shows on Friday, November 29th- Sub Theory’s rescheduled CD Release show at Hodi’s Halfnote (their original date was the day after the flood) and a FREE show by the Old Town Players at Avogadro’s Number. There is a lot more going on this week, of course. Check out the Ravenmount facebook page to see more events and music related information as it appears on facebook.

If the Thanksgiving spirit and/or my begging so moves you, check out my tip jar on this blog, which operates via paypal and is thus pretty straightforward and secure.

Last, but not least, THANK YOU to all the lovely people who have supported my efforts so far with Ravenmount. When I started, I just wanted to do something more productive and demonstrably useful, rather than stay in academia writing papers no one wants to read. I was ‘post-suicidal’, and needed a way to rewrite my life so that it felt like something worth waking up for. Going broke aside, Ravenmount has proven a great success in many ways, not least of which by connecting me to many friends and supporters who make it hard to believe I am better off dead.
