This week’s Dead Jam introduced a modified format that allows more ‘jam’ time, and makes it possible for more people to have a chance at playing. The new schedule starts the night with an hour-long jam from 9-10pm, with an hour of the house band from 10-11 and a second jam session from 11-midnight. The house band takes the stage again after the second jam session, and whoever is still around after the second house band’s set can join in for the jam session that closes out the night, lasting till 2am. It makes for a very late Monday night, but no later than the Funk Jam that also goes on at the same time at Hodi’s Halfnote.
The Dead Jam is every other Monday, so the next one will be on November 24th starting at 9pm. The Funk Jam at Hodi’s is every Monday night, with a house band set that starts around 10pm, and a jam session from the end of the house set till 2am.
For both jams, musicians should expect to bring their instruments. Both events provide drums, though if you wish to play hand drums at Avo’s you should bring yours, as there are not always other people there with hand drums. At both events it is a good rule of thumb to bring your own instrument, and if you are a drummer it is a great idea to bring your own sticks. There is no cover and no sign-up ahead of time for either event, though if you are under 21 Hodi’s does charge $5; folks who are 21 or older get in free for the Funk Jam.
