Amidst all the news of the shooting at the Sikh temple in Milwaukee, the continued killings in Syria, the lethal lightning strike at the NASCAR race, etc., there was one bit of news which stood out as a positive advance in humanity’s attempt at making itself a species worth saving. While it’s really just another robot, the explorer robot Curiosity made everyone on my twitterfeed rather pleased this evening, as it made a clean landing on the surface of Mars and began taking pictures.
The brave little robot is all on its own, yet another of our metal avatars wandering the surface of our neighboring planet, hoping to find traces of chemicals that will suggest that Mars once harbored life of its own. Between this and the vast array of great music, art and literature we as a species are still managing to create, maybe the aliens will overlook the barbaric ways we as a species treat each other. We’re creative enough to make Mars landers, so maybe they will ignore the fact that we still let national ‘leaders’ slaughter hundreds of people every week, and the fact that the male portion of our species has still not fully recognized that the female half is in fact from the same species. By the time the aliens come out from wherever they’re hiding, we may have gone through a few more major wars, the rich against everyone else or women against men, but the aliens will hopefully recognize that the survivors of our species are capable of truly great things.
Then again, maybe it would be best of Curiosity does not make first contact with anything sentient just yet.
